CHINESE NEW YEAR MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER

I am delighted to send my best wishes to the Chinese community for the New Year and to wish everyone happiness in the forthcoming Year of the Dog.

This festival has, of course, always been important to the Chinese community. Traditionally marking the start of ploughing, planting and the earth coming back to life, it is a time to celebrate friendship and family and to look forward to the future.

These celebrations, of course, now reach out well beyond the Chinese community and are shared and enjoyed by people from all backgrounds. So this festival gives us all the chance both to reflect on the great contribution of the Chinese community to this country's success, prosperity and culture, and how we all gain from the diversity of our society.

With best wishes,
Tony Blair

Chinese New Year

I would like to wish all the viewers of NTDTV a very happy New Year.

I am sure the 2006 Chinee New Year Global Gala will be a most enjoyable occasion. I know how spectacular events to mark the Chinese New Year can be, and how popular they are with people from all communities.

This year in London, it will be a particular significant time as it marks the beginning of an exciting three-month celebration of Chinese culture.

From business to the arts, Britain's Chinese community has made an immense contribution to our national life. Britain can be proud of its vibrant, multi-racial society, and of our British identity and shared values.

Wherever you live, may you and your family have a most enjoyable New Year, and a peaceful and prosperous Year of the Dog.

David Cameron
